Hello: I actually came here for the same reason as you. I had my ThinkPad R61i as a Hackintosh for a while, but now that I got a real Mac, I have no use for that anymore and was considering a dedicated Ubuntu machine again. I'm running the live disc right now, and it seems ok. One thing to check on is the Intel Pro/ Wireless 3945 card. It didn't work right out the box, so I'm going to do a little research on that and check back with you. Let me know if you have already found a solution.

Lenovo R61 Specs
Will the graphics card and wireless work with ubuntu on this laptop? Does anyone here have any experience with this laptop? Thanks in advance for replies.I know this post was from last year, but in case anyone is thinking of doing the same, I can confirm that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS works perfectly on my Lenovo R61i laptop. Windows XP and Windows 7 can also be installed using VirtualBox software and appear to work without problem. Hi, I'm typing this from a T61.both Lucid and Natty work great with 2GB of RAM! A funny story.used to run xp on this laptop, until HD 'crashed' with bad sectors.didnt want to deal with a BS MS reinstall, decided to run live disk utility and found 14 bad sectors.proceeded to install Lucid - and bad sectors decreased to 2!! Sound, Unity graphics, wireless networking worked right after disk installation.and did i mention that the HD miraculously repaired itself?
Or is xp bad for your HD? The T61 will be a classic Ubuntu laptop.
The newer models, the T/W 500's and above, dont run Ubuntu as smoothly. Oh well, good example that newer is not always better.
